Piano Lessons

Classical/Pop

For adults and children, beginner or intermediate.
At my home or yours in Magog and surroundings or even online.

What I do

I essentially teach my beginner students how to read music and piano basics. To do so, I use the Alfred’s Basic Piano Library books. As soon as my students are ready, I start to give them pieces of the classical repertoire or other (according to preferences). When basic theory and technique is learned, we focus on learning new pieces. For the younger ones, I like to add educative games to make the experience more fun.

For more advanced students (who already know how to read music), we concentrate on learning new pieces, working on piano technique and interpretation in general.

FAQ

A package is a serie of 10 lessons on a 10 consecutive weeks period. There is no particular time to subscribe, the serie starts on the same date as the first lesson. Adjournments are not accepted. A maximum of 2 lessons following the serie is offered to catch up all types of withdrawals.

All individual lessons must be payed the day of the lesson. For a package of lessons, the whole payment can be payed before the start of the serie but must be payed the day of the first lesson.  I have a preference for cash, but I also accept transfers at my email address (nicolasjeay@hotmail.ca) or checks.

In-Home fees include:

  • Travel cost (gaz, car wear, etc…) according to the Automobile allowance rates of Canada’s Revenue Agency.
  • Time of travel. Each hour or half-hour lost spent on the road is one less student in my schedule. This time will therefore be counted in additional fees.

It really depends on each kid’s motivation, awakening and concentration. According to me, 6 years old is a good age to start, when the student knows how to read numbers and letters.

For adults, I usually go with 1h lessons. According to their concentration level, kids 9 and + will go between 45min or 1h and younglings (6 and +) will go between 30min or 45min.

Concerning the frequency of individual lessons, I recommend one lesson each week (no less, no more), to keep a good follow-up with the student, answer questions and help him with his everyday issues.  In my experience, this is also a better method to keep the student’s motivation. More than one lesson per week is useless, because there is not enough progress to be worth it, and one lesson every two weeks or more will tend to make the student procrastinate.

For beginners, I recommend to start with a digital piano, which will be more affordable, less invasive, will require less maintenance (no need to tune) and will make it possible to adjust volume and/or play with headphones to not disturb those around. If the pleasure and motivation keep going, then we can think about investing in a real acoustic upright, baby grand or even grand piano.

Today, there are a lot of good digital pianos that get close to the feeling of an acoustic piano. Good brands to consider are Yamaha, Kawai, Roland or Casio. According to me, the two main things to get are a piano with 88 keys (which corresponds to a standard sized piano) and an action feel (weight when you press a key that imitates an acoustic piano).
